Description
Additional Information

Metallurgical furnace charge binder is a key auxiliary material in the metallurgical industry used to agglomerate loose furnace charges (such as iron ore powder, coke powder, steel slag, fluorite, etc.), enhancing the strength, stability, and metallurgical performance of the charge. In smelting processes such as blast furnaces, converters, and electric furnaces, it reduces dust emission from the charge, improves permeability, increases smelting efficiency, and simultaneously reduces raw material consumption.
Classification of Metallurgical Furnace Charge Binders
Based on chemical composition and source, they can be categorized as follows:
Organic Binders
Natural organic binders: such as starch, dextrin, cellulose derivatives (sodium carboxymethyl cellulose CMC), lignosulfonates, etc. These binders are widely sourced, low-cost, and decompose easily at high temperatures without introducing harmful impurities. However, their strength at room temperature may be low, requiring combination with other components.
Synthetic organic binders: including resins (phenolic resin, epoxy resin), rubber latex, polyacrylamide, etc. They offer high binding strength and excellent forming effects but are more expensive. Some products may produce harmful gases at high temperatures, necessitating consideration of environmental friendliness.
Inorganic Binders
Silicates: such as water glass (sodium silicate), calcium silicate, etc., which are characterized by high-temperature resistance and high strength, making them suitable for high-temperature smelting environments. However, they may introduce silicon elements, affecting the composition of certain specific furnace charges.
Phosphates: such as aluminum phosphate, magnesium phosphate, etc., which provide stable binding performance, high-temperature resistance, and strong chemical inertness. They are suitable for furnace charges with high purity requirements but are relatively costly.
Cement-based binders: such as ordinary Portland cement, which are low-cost and easily accessible, suitable for scenarios where high strength is not required. However, they may increase the calcium content in the furnace charge.
Composite binders: formulated from a combination of organic and inorganic components, leveraging the advantages of both (e.g., high strength at room temperature and good high-temperature stability). They can meet the customized needs of different furnace charges and represent the current development trend.
As the metallurgical industry moves towards green and efficient development, binders are being upgraded to be low-pollution, high-performance, and multifunctional:
Developing bio-based organic binders (e.g., plant starch derivatives) to replace traditional chemical products and reduce environmental pollution.
Optimizing composite binder formulations by incorporating nanomaterials and polymer additives to enhance binding efficiency and high-temperature stability.
Integrating intelligent production to achieve precise control of binder usage and reduce raw material consumption.
Although metallurgical furnace charge binders are auxiliary materials, they play an irreplaceable role in improving the economic efficiency, environmental friendliness, and efficiency of metallurgical processes. Their technological innovation and application directly impact the sustainable development of the metallurgical industry.
